And in 1937, the Supreme Court did agree with attorney Goodman's appeal, striking down the Oregon Criminal Syndicalism law as unconstitutional.  A representative of the Communist party, Fred Walker, spoke spiritedly of the need for all believers in democracy to rally behind this legal case to insure that the principles of democracy be preserved.  So I accepted invitations to attend many more meetings in Portland where I had the opportunity to talk with Communist leader Walker.  At that time I learned that their fundamental political program was the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system, replacing it with a socialist system which they claimed was succeeding in the Soviet Union.
